Building Strong Foundations for Future Success
Our Middle School Program, which encompasses Grades 6, 7, 8, & 9, is designed to provide students with a solid academic foundation while also fostering their independence, creativity, and social development. The transition from Primary to Secondary education is a critical stage in a student’s life, and we aim to support this transition by offering a balanced approach to learning that includes both academic rigor and opportunities for personal growth.
In our Middle School, we focus on helping students become independent learners who can take responsibility for their education. Our curriculum challenges students to think critically, solve problems, and make connections across subjects. At the same time, we emphasize the development of social and emotional skills to ensure students can navigate this transitional period with confidence.
Our student-centered approach encourages curiosity, resilience, and responsibility. Students are given the tools and opportunities to explore their interests, ask questions, and develop a deeper understanding of the world around them.
From 8:00 am to 1:00 pm, students engage in focused academic work, covering the core subjects of our STEAM Program (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math), Language Program, and History/Geography. These core subjects lay the foundation for a future-ready education, equipping students with the skills and knowledge needed for a rapidly changing world.
Our STEAM Program integrates Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics, emphasizing problem-solving, creativity, and collaboration. Through hands-on projects, experiments, and real-world applications, students learn to think critically and develop the skills necessary to solve complex problems. This interdisciplinary approach prepares students for future careers in fields that demand innovation and technical expertise.
Our bilingual approach continues in Grades 6–9, with a strong emphasis on proficiency in English and Italian as the primary languages of instruction. Students also have the opportunity to acquire German as an additional language, ensuring they develop a global perspective and strong communication skills.
The Language Program is structured based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (A1–C2), allowing students to be placed in classes appropriate for their proficiency level. This system provides a personalized learning experience, ensuring students are both challenged and supported in their language acquisition journey.
In History and Geography, students delve into the study of historical events, societal changes, and the interconnections between people and the environment. The curriculum encourages critical thinking, inquiry, and analysis, helping students understand the past and apply these insights to understand the present and future.
In the afternoon, from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm, students participate in our DISCOVERY Program, which focuses on activities that nurture creativity, physical well-being, and personal development. The DISCOVERY Program is designed to complement the academic rigor of the morning, giving students opportunities to explore their passions and interests in a dynamic, hands-on environment.
The DISCOVERY Program offers a wide range of cocurricular activities, including:
Our Immersion Days and Camps are a key part of the DISCOVERY Program, allowing students to apply their academic learning in real-world contexts. These activities offer experiential learning opportunities, helping students develop a deeper understanding of the subjects they study and connect with the world around them. Whether it’s a field trip exploring the natural environment, a cultural exchange experience, or an art-based retreat, these immersive opportunities help students ignite their passions and build a broader worldview.
Our K.I.N.D. framework—Kindness, Innovation, Navigation, and Discovery—guides everything we do, ensuring that our Middle School program nurtures both the academic and personal growth of each student.
At the International School of Switzerland, we believe that success goes beyond academics. Our Secret Skills program focuses on nurturing the essential life skills that prepare students for challenges in and out of the classroom. These skills include:
Students develop these Secret Skills through project-based learning, our STEAM program, and hands-on experiences like Immersion Days and Camps. They’re also integrated into our DISCOVERY Program and daily school life, ensuring that students grow both academically and personally.
Secret Skills are crucial for navigating the complexities of the modern world. By focusing on these skills, we equip students with the tools they need to succeed in university, careers, and life.
