Bridging Cultures, Building Global Citizens
At the International School of Switzerland, located in the heart of Ticino, we understand that language is essential for personal and academic success. Our Language Program is carefully designed to provide students with a solid foundation in English, Italian, and German, with the flexibility to explore additional languages. We aim to create an environment where language learning thrives, equipping students with the linguistic skills needed for success in school, university, and beyond.
Our Language Program focuses on mastering the three primary languages spoken in our region, creating a multilingual environment where students can thrive.
In addition to our core languages, we provide students with the opportunity to study a variety of languages through elective courses. These options allow students to choose between language acquisition or literature courses:
Our language courses follow the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR), which ensures that students are placed in classes according to their proficiency level. Upon joining the school, students are tested in their chosen language(s) to assess their skill level, and they are then placed in classes with others at a similar proficiency level. This system allows our teachers to provide tailored support and helps students progress through the levels efficiently.
We take pride in our diverse community and recognize that every student’s language background is unique. Whether students are native speakers or new to a language, our program ensures that all students are supported and able to progress at their own pace. The vertical placement system, which groups students by proficiency rather than age, helps each learner develop at an appropriate level, promoting faster language acquisition and deeper mastery.
Language learning at ISS goes far beyond textbooks. We offer immersive, real-world experiences that allow students to apply their language skills in meaningful contexts. Our Immersion Program is an integral part of this approach, offering students the chance to practice their language skills outside the traditional classroom. Through school trips, cultural exchanges, and language-specific workshops, students gain exposure to native speakers and authentic cultural experiences, further enhancing their language acquisition.
Moreover, while we offer Italian, English, and German in our academic time, our DISCOVERY Program provides additional opportunities to explore other languages. Students can engage in language-focused activities, projects, and community events that introduce them to new languages, making language learning dynamic and engaging.
